I had tried to download BOINC 4.05. three times before and got the same 
error message, but I tried again just now and this time the installation 
worked.  Guess I'll never know whay it didn't work the first three times...

Sounds like something is corrupted.

Try again and see if the problem repeats. If so, then ask again but with 
further details please.

Note that the s@h link will be getting hammered at the moment and may well 
be maxed out. Some connections might get dropped or time out.


Also, I thought that Boinc was supposed to be self-updating.  Or was
that just my imagination?

You update Boinc. The project clients are automatically updated by the 
Boinc client. Boinc is just the supervisory framework.
