My general understanding of alpha & beta trials are:
Alpha: New development, new features added, features updated, debuging;
Beta: Feature set 'freeze', continued system test and debug.
And then the world gets to test the final for 'shakedown' debugging
(:-))
In a usual software environment, alpha test is in-house testing. The
developers release the software to the alpha testers who are people in
the company who run the stuff through their testing suites and try
pushing all the buttons and large scale installations and such.
Calm down with the exclaimation points. I know it's not a commercial
project. I am not claiming it is. What I am doing is refering the
current status of seti/boinc to a roughly equivalent stage of a
commercial project.
You are speaking of a COMMERCIAL ENVIRONMENT! This is NOT a Commercial
Environment!!!!
Which I admitted, except for some reason you chose to delete that part
of my post. I have a hard believing it was unintensional to do so and
I find this selective quotation to be dishonest on your part.
Let me re-insert my statement:
When software is open source, all of it is in the open, the active
development, the alpha test and the beta are all out there. This
makes it sometimes harder to distinguish the various phases.
This is a Scientific Experiment!!!! You are making
this sound like it is a for profit project!!! IT IS NOT!!!
It IS a project to see if the project can be brought on-line and run
properly with the average cost of 3 1/2 CENTS US per user!!!!
Somehow I think berkeley has booked more than 3.5 cents/year for this
project.
Name JUST ONE Commercial Comapny that can do what Boinc and Seti under
it that can come anywhere NEAR that cost!!!
Why should I? What is your point?
You CANNOT!!! It CANNOT be done by the Commercial Comapnies! THAT is
wht the Scientific Community has chosen to do this project!!!
At what point did I claim that it is being done by or should be done
by a commercial company?
I think seti/boinc seems to be about alpha test stage.
As I previously stated, your opinions are important to you!
Your opinion must be very important to you, to judge by your use of
GREAT RUNES and EXCLAIMATION POINTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey, I am glad to help seti/boinc in the state it is in. I still
think it's pre-mature to call it "beta" or "trial". The reason I
think so is that people will think it should be up and running for
majority of the time and the majority of setups when clearly there is
a bit more debugging to be done.
Every project passes through a development stage, this one is no
different. Saying it's "trial quality" just makes people angry when
it doesn't work as well as they expected.
