Well I've never yet figured out how to make a backup of the registry. And in
this last case I'm thinking even that would have done no good.

When doing a backup with NTBACKUP (on NT 4.0, Win2K, WinXP, or W2003 Server)
select "System state" as part of your backup; that gets the registry. And 
likely a lot of other junk...

You can also export the registry to .reg files with REGEDIT.

As for backups, Got plenty of those.

Mostly good for recovering data files. Trying to restore the OS and apps
is so close to impossible it's a waste of time to try. Rebuild the OS,
reinstall the apps, and restore the data.
