<Top-posting for reverse-continuity's sake>
Devon, I had some WU's several days ago that were as you described, *no* CPU
time. It turned out that these were units that hadn't downloaded completely
due to a server crash/loss of comunication during the download phase. If the
connection can't be re-established within a certain time, or if you turn off
your machine before the units are finished trying to re-connect this happens
(In my experience). They are then listed as 'completed' with no credit
claimed and returned so the splitter knows to send out another copy of the
WU without waiting the 14 days. (This observation is mainly conjecture but
is based on first-hand expereince and lurking in the forums a little, plus
it's the logical way to do it).
There's a thread in the forums about this, a few people are seeing this. I
however have a slightly different problem and have posted in the thread
twice, I'll cut'npaste 'em here, hang on.......
Message Boards: Number Crunching: Short wu's
My first post of three days ago:
"Since installing BOINC 4.05 I've had about one-in-five WUs processes in
about half the time it normally takes. I know this isn't what this thread is
initially discussing but it seemed the best place to post. I've had 'noisy'
units before, rarely, where processing is aborted after a few minutes but
this is different. About 20% of my WUs are showing 100% processed in around
50% of the time expected since installing BOINC4.05/SETI 4.03. This is over
about 20 WUs processed since installing 4.05 and seems consistant.
A bug perhaps?

And my latest problem just posted:
"Since my last post in this thread I've been getting a situation where about
60% of my WUs show either just under or just over *one minute*. The usual
completeion time is 2:45. I have this situation on at least two machines and
on the one worst affected I left Prime95 running overnight to test the
stability of my machine. Prime ran for eight hours 35 minutes with no
errors. So the machine's OK, I guess that leaves BOINC? I can't imagine,
going by the percentage of 'noisy units' with classic, that these are all
noisy units. With classic I'd see maybe one in 60 WUs being noisy, not two
out of three."
There are one or two people who mention having no CPU time next to completed
units in that thread. I haven't seen that, all mine have times next to them
ranging from 58 seconds to 1:29.
<Thinking on my feet here and checking the BOINC log, it's good the server
is down>
Maybe Berkeley is distributing a whole bunch of units from this area where
some of the media are going ape over 'contact'? So far, all the units that
are finishing short are similar, i.e.04my04aa.25870.22832.872154.2xx_x. I
had 20 units in that range and only four of them processed as expected, (as
in took around 2:45:00, the same as usual units) the other 16 were all
'finished' in under one minute 30 seconds.
In my 'log' I have two units processed before this block that took the
expected amount of time and now have done two units after this block, one
completed in 2:40:28 and the other has been going for 22 minutes so it's
past the one minute 30 'danger zone'.
May have been just that block of units then. It still doesn't explain the
problem outlined in my first post, where I had a bunch of WU's finishing in
about half the expected time. They are no longer in my 'log' so I can't see
if they wre a contigous block as well. Damn ! should have thought of that!
Anyone experiencing anything similar?

Yeah, I know it will bail if there's too much noise, but I thought it

Yes, it happens sometimes in both Classic and Boinc. Usually because
of too much noise in the unit but could be other things besides just
noise.

Am I right to assume that a WU with 100% completion but no CPU time
was bailed out of by S@H?
I have 4 of these out of 7 WUs at 100%.
