What's SETI looking for?
Any kind of non-natural radio emission. This would not, in my
opinion, be expected to be a communication directed towards us. It
would be an emission which is incidental to some other activity i.e.
communication within their own society, or maybe some activity we
cannot guess at the present time. Maybe there's none out there, but
we won't know unless we look long and hard.
However, omnidirectional broadcasts would be extremely unlikely to be
strong enough to be detectable at interstellar distances. We should
only realistically expect to spot narrow beams that are pointed in our
direction.
We're only looking for reapeating stuff huh? I've seen some massive spikes
on some of my units. I wonder if any of them are the result of EM from
thermonuclear explosions? That's one omnidirectional source that would be
strong enough to reach interstellar distances. Is there a war going on
somewhere that Dubya isn't in on? Man, he'll be pissed.
