Personally, when one considers the risk potentials, broadcasting one's
presence probably is not a good idea, merely from an economics point
of view, if nothing else.
Alien economics might possibly be similar to our own. There might be
lots of little aliens who will pay $24.95 to have their personal
messages beamed towards 40 of the nearest sunlike stars, and this could
be used to pay for a serious "Rosetta Stone" type signal between the
personal stuff.
The web pages for "Call Your Star" and "Cosmic Call" seem to have been
shut down now, but they sent batches of signals out from a Ukrainian
radio telescope each year from 1999 to 2003 and were funded in this
manner.
