Have you tried bypassing zone alarm during the account process? IIRC
there is an option in zone alarm to turn it off, something like allow
all internet activity.
That shouldn't be necessary with BOPINC. XP, and ZA.
XP is pretty much NT-5.
BOINC needs internet access and it needs to act as a server.
Go into program control, frind BOINC_gui and make sure it has both
internet and server rights.
I'm running v3.7.xxx. As I said, I tried turning off all the filtering, and yet,
with "privacy advisor" on, I still see that it is blocking cookies. I'm rather
leery about shutting down ZA, as my ISP has tons of compromised hosts, and see
I don't think cookies should be a problem.
You could try going to <firewall> and <zones>. Add the URL to which
BOINC connects (the one you need for the server when first setting up)
and make it a trusted zone.
several hundred probes and attacks per day (from local IPs). As far as I know,
this version of ZA doesn't have a bypass option. And before somebody tells me to
upgrade, as I recall, v4 isn't compatible with NT4.
You'd have to check their site for that, or contact them.
NT-4? Are you running ZA pro, or the free version?
In fact, unless zone alarm is functioning as your proxy you should be
able to simply exit, register your account, then restart it when you are
finished. That way you will know for sure if ZA is causing the trouble.
On a related note, I hope ZA is not your firewall. It is somewhat
functional for stopping outgoing traffic (but programs CAN bypass it and
talk directly to your network driver) but useless on incoming traffic.
All it does for incoming is open ports that are not normally open anyway
and report traffic on them.
Must be a different ZA than I use.
Routers are cheap these days. If you are on broadband - get one.
I do run ZA behind a router.
I'm on dial-up. A router seems like a little overkill to me (although as you
say, ZA isn't the most capable piece of software out there). Despite the
filtering being turned off, ZA actually reports that it's filtering other sites
too, like NYTimes, and a few others. Strangely, other sites work fine.
My browser does that even with ZA turned off.
It can get confusing with the browser and fire wall both killing
sites.
Ah well. This filtering thing is really starting to annoy me. A friend's company
is selling off old systems. Maybe that's a good excuse to dump ZA & upgrade to
something that works.
Works good for me.
OTOH I'm running a current version.
