I installed Real Player (RP) on my system XP.
Usually I complete a work unit in 17hr. Wintout SETI, as soon as
...
I checked and that changed somwhat
Without SETI and RP, my CPU resources are about 5-7%
A soon as RP runs I reach 30% or so, when it is idle say 5%.
When SETI runs it jumps to 100%
When they run together, SETI shows a slow down of about 30% or come back
to
normal wheh RP is idle.
RP affects thus a lot the process of work units. I loss somes hours (30%
of
17h)

End of analysis :
I use a Compaq, XP Home Ed, 196 MB RAM and a 500 MHz CPU.
RP working in streaming audio has a tendency to take the CPU time of SETI,
30 vs. 70%, then 50-50 then 70-30% after a few minutes
Sometimes in idle mode, RP jumps to 75%...with an average close to 30%
So I had to reset priorities in the Task Manager/Properties of each process
:
SETI above normal, RP Normal (more than normal slow down SETI to 30%) : that
gives about a 45-55% for each, with SETI in first place.
If you set RP lower than normal , you can no more listen to streaming audio.

Hope this helps.
