The icon in my tray sometimes has a little blue square in it with a white 
lowercase "i". Sometimes it blinks. Also it often has a red mark on it. What 
gives ? 

They indicate that new messages have been listed in the 'message' tab. As I 
recall, the red one indicates an error message, and the 'i' indicates an 
informational message.
