You need to be on good terms with your boss and your IT support and ask them *first*.


Strictly speaking, running anything not directly work related on work's equipment can be construed as theft of resources... Leaving the PC you use switched on just to run SETI software may well be frowned upon.

There's also the paranoia of security and reliability and any adverse knock-on effects to be sympathetic with. Especially, false hits with Windows virus scanners might be a problem. There would be no such problem with Linux or Unix or Macs (no viruses! (:-)).

But then also, the boss may welcome some positive publicity if you set up a team with the company's name... (Must ask first!!)


In short:

*ASK*  *FIRST* !!!  They may well ok it.


BTW: I manage a few servers and firewalls. Everything is blocked unless there is good reason for access (Windows non-secureness worries (:-((. I'd soon notice any 'unusual' traffic listed in the logs...
