As for #4 of your list of questions,
First select the "Projects" tab
next, right click on a project (ex.  SETI@home) and select "Update".
You can then monitor the update progress under the "Messages" tab.

One warning I've noted on the board, take care to avoid the "Detach"
selection, appears to have serious consequences.
