Unless I'm sorely mistaken, even digitally compressed transmissions still
need a carrier wave to ride on. This carrier wave can be detected.
I personally think one reason we haven't picked anything up yet is that
the RF era is relatively short lived. We'll find something better within
the next century or so and stop using RF altogether... we're already
heading down that path with cable and directional satellite so it's not too
far-fetched.
