I believe it's all in the science of the project that is also
important.As my example,I started learning about SETI and the science
behind it,the astronomy of our universe.I had to learn more about my
computer to better run SETI.
I've posted and replied to many posts in this newsgroup.I bet there are
many people out there that know more about science and computers then
before.
Seti started the distributed computing science.With BOINC newer projects
like weather prediction and protein folding and other science and
medical science projects started.
Now IBM is getting on board with their own BOINC like project. 
It's all about the advancement of science.
