hi,
After some years of having SETI in my mind but doing nothing I finally
got broadband so thought I'd take another look.
Some questions I hope you can help me with.:
Is the SETI shared computing network still as lively as it looked
once?
After so many years hasn't the sky been fully covered yet (in so far
as SETI is able)?
Is there any other software rather than a screen saver to do the data
munching and transfers? (I prefer not to use screen savers..)
I'm sure there are lots of other questions I have missed as a newbie \
interested person. :)

Hi Pete, welcome to the community!
I think SETI is still as active as it was, if not more. There are some
differences now, since it is just switching over to the "new" boinc
projects.
The sky will never be fully covered since new techniques will emerge,
besides: any signal needs a starting date right? Currently SETI is
planning on using different methods to search for ETI, AstroPulse is the
most well know.
There is other software besides the screensaver, as their has always
been. The BOINC framework does not need a screensaver, it runs as an
independent program. Check out
http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/ for more
info on BOINC and current seti projects. Also check
http://seti.ssl.berkeley.edu/ for a nice summary of current projects.
For some reason however people in this newsgroup sometimes seem to have
more differences than when SETI started. But since the comon goal
(finding ETI) is still the same the differences are usually quickly
setteled.
If you need some more info, try one of the many forums for SETI. Just
try finding some in Google :)
