Almost certainly it was done to reduce RFI (radio frequency interference),
something that ought to be dear to the heart of anyone interested in SETI
(hint don't run PCs with the covers off or in modded transparent cases).

Unfortunately the legal limits on RFI in Europe and America are far higher
than would be needed to prevent RFI to anyone operating an amateur SETI
station and seriously compromises the low signal amateur radio reception
that future radio astronomers are likely to be interested in.
