I am used to running setiathome on a pentium and when I check the

I have a flashy new PC - and this has HT technology. When I look at
CPU usage, I see that the processor runs at 50%.
How can I get Seti to use all the spare "oomph" I now have available.

In Classic you need to use a program like SetiDriver which in turn
uses the Command Line Interface(CLI) version of Classic. In addition
to being faster it lets you run many instances, in your case 2, side
by side calculations. Your cpu usage will then show 100%.
You are seeing 100% usage of 1 of your cpus but no use on the other
one, hence 50%.
Personally I would recommend getting on board with Boinc, you have to
set the preferences for 2 cpus, in your case, there too.
Classic is "rumoured" to be closed in the next month or so. Of course
it has been "rumoured" for the last year or so!
But in fact the end is coming and is closer today than yesterday and
closer still tomorrow. When the end comes you will use boinc or not
search for ET.
IN ADDITION Boinc lets you choose between several different search you
want to do, including but not limited to Climate Prediction analysis,
Black Hole research, there are others in the works. In fact Climate
Prediciton qand Black Hole reqsearch are still in the Beta phase. Seti
is NOT still in the Beta phase, but does have some growing pains still
cropping up.
Here is the web page for Boinc: http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/
