Looking back -- I have DLed the screensaver version.

I am running XP, but I take it that the CLI version that works for Win
NT will work with XP?

I will switch out to that version and see if that improves it.

Yes the CLI will work just fine with XP, 2k, an 98.
You need the file named:
setiathome-3.03(or 8).386-winnt-cmdline.exe
You will be better off if you also download SetiDriver. It is an add
on program that runs the CLI PERFECTLY and easily lets you have a
cache for those times when you cannot connect.
If you connect to the internet thru a proxy you will need the 3.08
version, if not then the 3.03 version will work a tiny bit faster. The
3.03 version is susceptible to hacking for a narrow range of people
that use a proxy to connect to the net. Most people do not, but if you
have ANY doubt or don't know get 3.08!
Just put all the files in a Seti directory and then run SetiDriver, it
will automatically run the CLI. When it comes up change the "desired
cache size" to at least 1 and then click the transmit button. It will
odnwload a unit and start processing it. If you want to have a local
cache, I have 5 on each machine, then put 5, or whatever, in the box.
It will download the desired amount and crunch away.
To maximize your crunching do not use a screen saver, just use the off
button when you leave the computer.
