I am still VERY new to Linux. My concern was that, although the machine
was
working, it could not fill it's cache (in automated fashion, like it is
designed to do) due to the problems with the server, I just wanted to
force
it to connect a few times in order to upload results and catch any new
work
units that might be available, over-riding the built in delay factor
(designed to stop the server getting swamped, I know) as I could in
Windows,
as the delay had built up to over 1 day before it would re-try and we are
scheduled for a cold snap.

Are you on a dial up? I had mine get over 7 days before I found the
answer.

Halt Boinc, look in your home directory, /home/your_user_name (Or
where ever you installed Boinc) find the file "client_state.xml".
Make a back up copy incase you mess up your first try. (*Always* do
this before following advice from a stranger on usenet:) ) Open
client_state.xml in a text editor, find the string,
"min_rpc_time>0</min_rpc_time", change whatever number is between
the "><"s to 0 (zero) then save this single change. Restart Boinc.

I know the answers are always there if one googles, it was a sheer moment
of
lazieness on my part, but there is so much to learn and so little time,
it
seems.

Think I found it by accident on the Boinc web forum.

Many thanks for that splendid piece of information. It will be tried out and
filed away for future reference (yes I am cautious of following advice on
Usenet (rm -r * for example), but my Linux box is still my experimental box
at this stage :-) ). I see the migration to the new hardware has gone off
OK and everything here is running smoothly now, I look forward to some
freezing nights before the spring so I can justify another computer or two
going on line.

Many thanks
