	But it is so recent.

Intelligent life on Mars had been preserved by technologies which
kept it warm enough for life. Canali were indeed observed and life was
pleasant and tranquil until they set about to invade the Earth.

The initial success at Grover's Mill was reported back to Mars.
Unbeknownst to them they carried with them the deadly disease which ended
the invasion. It spread on Mars and destroyed all intelligent life.

The warming technology failed and the planet sank back to its
natural frozen state as intelligent life ended on Mars. By the time
telescopes improved there were few signs left. By the time probes from Earth
arrive all was covered by the dust of the storms which often blot out the
entire planet surface from space.

If only the Martians had not been bent upon conquest two
civilizations could share freely to their mutual benefit. It is only good
fortune to the Earth the Martians had not conceived of the microbe
transmission of disease.
