There are various daemons available to transparently do this for you
automatically.
Look up whatever "pppd" for your distro.

Thanks for your help, I read the pppd man page with new enthusiasm
and got "pppd call provider demand persist" to work!! All I have to
figure out is how to get it to disconnect after transmission.
Thanks again, any suggestion on a proper disconnect, I've tried
"idle n, holdoff n, and nopersist?
