I'm curious as to whether the SETI project expects to be able to keep the
same level of support by the computing community that they had when they
started work on the BOINC platform when they (the project) can't keep their
servers online.

This time Berkeley seems not to be guilty. After all BOINC is new
software and a new system for itself. Just think how long it takes
when MS brings out a new OS to get it stable and free of errors ;-)
They have a nice farm of servers (most of them new, that's what I
understand, if I read the newsarchive - I'm a returning user, went of
for 1 Year. Frustrated of my "slow" pc, now it feels better with
higher CPU power). Many Servers -> many work -> many ways of errors ->
many costs. And if there's no power, the best server doesn't work.
More bad if you haven't the money for an private powerplant, like
http://www.apcc.com - look for PowerStructure.

Seti Classic starts with a handful of users, now there are 5.4
millions who will switch to BOINC one after another. Even if only 50%
will switch (excluding most of the one-night-stand-crunchers) there
will be 2.7 million users right from the start.

So, rise up your BOINC cache and if the servers are down again, do it
like me: BEAT THE NICE LOOKING TEDDYBEAR BESIDE YOUR KEYBOARD. It
helps, really. But please don't be cruel to your girl-/boyfriend,
little sister/brother or another type of living animal :-) Buy a cat,
it is the best way to stay cool. The sound of a cat on your knees
which feels alright let you forget all your sorrows :-)

So, let's all together hope for stable servers and happy crunching
