Dear Eg,
Yes, it's faster or what.
Double click on the Boinc icon in your toolbar, which opens the GUI
(Graphical User Interface).
On the GUI, click on the "Work" tab.
The "CPU Time" and "To Completion" fields tell the story. CPU Time is how
much time the CPU has worked on the project, and To Completion is how much
time is left until the Work Unit (WU) is completed.
For both fields, the units: xxxx:yy:zz, where xxxx is hours, yy is minutes,
and zz is seconds.
For instance, on a 1.4 GHz [PowerLeap] Celeron, my Boinc says:
CPU Time = 1445:50:39
To Completion = 160:25:07
If you total them both together, that comes out to 1606 hours, or 67 days,
the total time to completion. When I first started working on this WU, the
total equaled 67 days, so the number has hardly changed. Of course, if
Boinc isn't actually running, then it will take longer to complete then 67
days.
At least, that's how long a ClimatePrediction WU takes on my computer.
Maybe SETI WUs are different. Personally, I switched from SETI to
ClimatePrediction when I switched to GUI. (I know, "... Boo hissss...")
In your Boinc GUI, remember to try right-clicking on everything. You never
know what you'll find.
Boinc does not wait until the WU is completed before returning completed
computations. Go on the Boinc website to adjust your Boinc's behavior.
I recommend browsing around the Boinc website. Most interesting would be
the webpage with statistics for your personal account. I recall seeing the
statistic of what percentage of time my CPU was actually crunching the WU
since I started working on it. Given that number, with a little Calculus,
you can also calculate the percentage of time that your CPU was not
working on the WU.
For the first ClimatePrediction WU, I generally have been leaving my
computer on 24/7, and the Boinc website reports the I've been working on my
WU 75% of the time. When the 2nd WU starts, I think I'll start turning off
the computer at night...
Best luck,
-Neil-
