24/7. An exception is with laptops where many compromises are made
for their battery operation and restricted size.

Agreed.  My computer has been running 24/7 for over 2 years with seti running.  No problems at all.  It likes it that way;-)

Agreed once again.  6 processors running at 100% load 24/7 with no problems.  Regular cleaning each month to blow out the dust and the accompanying dust bunnies makes the machines cooler and quieter.  Your problem is not overheating, it's under cooling.
