Worse still, some UPS's use the serial port in a non-standard
pseudo-parallel port way to play tricks. This requires the
manufacturer's proprietary driver and direct access to the port for it
to work.

yes; they use a 9 pin, and tie txd/rxd straight (2-2, 3-3), not crossed
(2-3, 3-2); then use DSR/DTR on 5 and 6 to control the data in a
synchronous fashion. they're trying to make a 9 pin serial work like a 25
pin DTE-DTE drag queen configuration. it's disturbing.
