I have a similar problem, but in addition I can't shut down my computer
normally. I have to end task on boinc and/or crash it to shut down. I
am running windows 98 OS and 524 Megs memory and mcafee virus and
firewall. I can't control any functions on boinc manager. it slows me
down so much I can't function. I had to uninstall inorder to regain use
of my machine. If I am required to run boinc to download seti I am
going to have to quit, I have been doing it since Oct 1999 and have
logged 8330 computer hours, completing 287 units. It would be a shame.
I am using win98. I suggest that you clean your computer often of temp
files.Do the regular maintenance of scandisk and defrag then anti virus
scan.
But the most important thing I do is I have only my anti virus and
firewall at startup. All I have running is my explorer and
systray, firewall and anti virus. Then I manually turn on BOINC Manager.
Also I have no programs having access to the internet thru my
firewall. Also I turn off any auto update features of ANY program. The
whole trick is to have as little as possible running.
Though running SETI classic 24/7 did crash my machine too often.
