Actually, there is less wear and tear on a computer when kept powered-on.  This is due to a
constant temperature and remaining at more-or-less a level of quiesence.  Turning on and off
a computer over and over has more wear due to changing temperatures and mechanical factors.
For example "chip creep".  But yes, you are consuuming some 250 watts per platform and thats
assuming no CRT monitor is left on.

I have had a SETI farm so it is multiple computers.  Some doing nothing else other than SETI
24/7/365.
