please excuse my ignorance but am i supposed to get rid of the old seti
client thing once my boinc account is activated / working?

From what I gather you shouldn't have to remove it completely. Just
make sure it isn't running at the same time as the BOINC version, or
it will take priority.

hmm i activated my boinc account because seti had stopped connecting to the
server etc but now seti is back up and running, but boinc (which to be
honest i dont understand anything of what it is telling me) appears to be
idle asnd not doing very much at all....

Did you try and attach to a project?
Boinc is kind of like Windows, under run many programs(projects), you
have to pick which ones and then attach to each individually.
Here is a web site of available DC projects right now:
http://distributedcomputing.info/projects.html
NOT all are up and running but all have a web site. They have ALL been
up and running in thevery recent past, some are just down because Seti
is having some problems with their fibre optic cable. Menaing that
people have gone to the other projects and used up what they had
avaiable.
