even though ive done nearly 600 units on the old one?
There's a bunch of info to be read on several Boinc related sites,
including Berkeley's own ones. First of, you can easily change your
previous account into a new Boinc/Seti account. It all depends on how
you wanna go on. The old credits are not lost, but they won't show in
your Boinc credits, mainly because the whole system has changed. You
are no longer credited for results of how many WU's you did, but you
will receive credits after all results have been verified and this
takes a bit longer than previously. The granted credit you'll receive
is some value.... not longer in WU's.
New units crunch in roughly the same time as old ones, at least for
now.
The main advantage of the Boinc system is that it maintains itself: as
soon as new versions of clients come out, they will be downloaded and
installed automatically. They also can add additional computations to
the system, without you having to bother to change things. The other
main advantage is that the thing can be set to caching without the
need of 3rd party s/w... although there is a limit of max 10 days
(which should be good enough in case of a major outage). And don't let
you scare off by the preferences line telling you "it will only
connect every somany days"; it will send in all results and keep the
cache filled in between - provided the system works 100%.
Which isn't the case right now... a lot of downloads fail and a lot of
uploads fail too... but Boinc keeps on trying till everything is done
100%. With a load of both classic and Boinc crunchers trying to catch
up it's likely to go on for a couple more days before things will have
been returned to normal - if the power problems don't return, or the
cable stealers or whatever :-)
Happy crunching,
Louis
cheers. i am crunching away as i type.. though i hve to say boinc is
crunching/munching quicker than the old seti - approx 4hrs per unit instead
of 5
