No I'm not in it for the stats, but I live in a UK area that has no

You have my sympathies.
I've just had a few months of stupidness with the "monopoly carrier"
here to get a broadband connection to a new business park! The best they
have offered is a very marginal 65dB path loss ADSL at 512kb/s if we're
very lucky on a good clear day with no rain for the last week and if
their exchange isn't too congested... (:-((
I guess a leased line is beyond your needs (:-/)
Try a 'question' to your MP. Mine speeded up a long tussle over BT
trying to plant one of their antique unsightly telephone "drop" poles in
a silly place. A year later, BT finally walked away
/without/ having
planted
_any_ 10m poles. Phew!
Can you get a radio link? There's lots of new upstarts using WiFi to
give rural coverage.
Also, the present boinc can be configured to connect only once in a
while, so you could set it to connect only once a week for example.
Future plans include adding a feature to boinc for machines that don't a
direct internet connection.
Worth checking further.
Good luck,
Martin
