Ok, I installed BOINC and got it working fine with SETI and even a few other
projects, however I'm electing to go back to just using the SETI classic
program on all of my PC's.
The reason being is the screen saver. The screensavers for BOINC, while
somewhat nifty, do not have the ability to be password enabled. That pretty
much defeats the whole purpose of a screensaver, if you use screensavers to
not only protect your monitor but also secure your PC.
While it is possible to just use another screensaver, I don't have much
inspiration to have running SETI in the background if its just hidden.
Sure, the SETI project (and the other BOINC projects) are cool and all --
but the years of a SETI classic user, I only really used it for the
screensaver functionality. I set the screensaver to appear after 20 minutes
and then go blank after another minutes. Moving the mouse, made the SETI
screensaver re-appear (along with password dialogue box) for another ten
minutes. The actual crunching of numbers in the background was just
something "abstract". Other than knowing it was doing something "cool" when
I wasn't using my computers anyway, I never really put a whole lot of
thought into it other than taking steps necessary to ensure that it would
always run (and be able to talk on the network). I have many years worth of
completed work units across several PC's, even thought never really
concerned myself with the actual work it was doing. Sure, its neat and
all, but as a "user" never put that much concern into it.
Anyone involved with the BOINC project that may stumble across this post,
please consider adding password functionality to the screensavers!
Thanks!
