Indeed they can't.
The 'unrestricted access' that viruses (and malware) can exploit on
Microsoft products is very greatly and securely restricted on all other
multiuser OSes.
An analogy is that you can build a house on a desert island with the
assumption that there is noone else there to break in. So you go cheap
and don't bother with doors and locks. Other OSes include the doors and
locks so that only you can play with your own data and noone else.
(There are strong arguments that MS OSes are just
/single user/ systems
with a few kludges added to make them
/look/ like they are multiuser.)
I started with MS OSes, and still support them. However, I do not use MS
for my own systems due to the very obvious shortcomings.
*All* the viruses spread around the web are from and to MS systems.
