My graphics card has 128megs of RAM. Can I use a piece of it to crunch
SETI?
No, the problem is they upgrade too fast so designing a program to use
one would be soooo generic it wouldn't be offset by the use of it.
I mean sure they sell a few hundred thousand units each but how many
of those people actually crunch Seti or Boinc? Then of those how many
would actually use a graphics card cruncher instead of/along with the
regular cpu cruncher? The numbers get smaller and smaller and the
gains quickly get outweighed by the difficulties.
Boinc however is "open source" meaning YOU can use the info provided
by Berkeley and design your own version of Boinc that would crunch on
a graphics card. There are several developers groups and programmers
groups too. There are even people "optimizing" the current client to
work better, so they may be able to help too.
