Were the 'golden' discs created because that was the best technology at the
time or someother reason? i.e. if the same project was launched today, would
they still use a copper record, or cd, or high capacity hdd, or what?
I believe the main reason was that they could be played back with simple
equipment, which could be described clearly with simple diagrams.

the top 500 supercomputers in the world, at 1.338 TeraFLOPs max.
As of 6/05, it wouldn't make the list.
