2 things...1st Boinc is having problems right now and very few units
are being credits.
2nd Boinc does NOT count units processed because some normally
crunched units can be MONTHS long, some of the Climate Prediction
units, while some can be minutes long, some Einstein units. So Boinc
instead counts credits that your computer gets for crunching a
particular unit. The longer your computer takes to crunch a unit the
more credit it requests. This request is then put i nthe pot with the
other people that have crunched the same unit you have and after a
consnensus is achieved the high and low are thrown out and if only 3
computers have returned requests the middle amount is given to
everyone that crunches the unit. If 4 people return the unit then the
high and low are still thrown out and the middle 2 are averaged and
that amount is given to everyone.
The problem with one credit for one unit is that Boinc is a
multi-project program. So if you are crunching a Climate unit and
takes 2 months to crunch should you not be given the appropriate
amount of credit for it, not just one credit? What about the people
that crunch Einstein units...they can properly do some units in under
30 minutes! Is it fair to give then one credit too?
So this system was decided upon as being the most fair to everyone.
Seti units can take anywhere from around an hour or so on the fast
computers to over 10 hours on the slow computers.
