OMG!!! I remember that old nightmare of the fixed size resource tables
getting full! A few times, I had to very gently coax an old Win95C
system to run for three months to complete a simulation. It was a case
of very strict DO NOT CLOSE OR OPEN *ANY* WINDOWS! (And this is on
"Windows" of course!)

All good old fun stuff.

I just have to wonder why anyone would voluntarily continue to try
coaxing such old stuff to continue working as a 'server'. Or why people
accept MS-Viruses as 'normal'...

I do it because it is easier than upgrading the machine! I WOULD try
Linux but have in the past and ti was too much like Unix, mounting
drives before using them and other such nonsense.
I DO have a copy of Knoppiz Linux with Boinc embedded and may try that
here soon. My wife got me a job at her work so I now have less free
time to play around. I am retired and people would look bad if I blew
the interview. It is only part time and it is fairly easy, so far. I
am in charge of keeping track of the whereabouts of 1600 some odd
computers with monitors and printers. BUT apparently there are no
repurcussions for people to swap printers willy nilly. The only saving
grace is that NO ONE has admin rights so the IT people, a different
groups of people, have to actually do the changes. That means
paperwork is generated. All I have to do is get them to include me in
the routing of that paperwork, a copy will do nicely, and my job is
MUCH easier.
Three surveys have been taken by my three predessors, apparently all
three wanted permanent work, and none of the three were ever entered
into the database. I have 7 buildings and as I said around 1600
computers, with monitors and most have printers attached. If you add
them together I am responsible for knowing where around 4300 or so
pieces of equipment are! BUT, also apparently, my boss isn't THAT
worried about it.
OH did I mention I am also responsible for ordering and tracking
replacements?! THAT seems to be the part that bothers my boss the
most. He wants people to have the equipment they need and that we have
equipment in the pipeline asap after knowing we need a replacement.
Some of the equipment will come from the Feds, some from the State and
some from the local jurisdiction.
