I do it because it is easier than upgrading the machine! I WOULD try
Linux but have in the past and ti was too much like Unix, mounting
drives before using them and other such nonsense.
I DO have a copy of Knoppiz Linux with Boinc embedded and may try that

I can sympathise on that. I stayed with Win95C for a very long time while I watched all the Win98 fun unfold. I even had USB running fine, even if the Win95 USB stack was 'rudimentary'.

If you've got well understood systems that work well enough, then you may as well keep them busy on that. Unless whatever thing 'new' offers some sort of overriding advantage. Unfortunately, I have to support all whatever systems are in use until the inertia to scrapping them or upgrading can be overcome.

Meanwhile, the latest 'consumer wrapped' linux distros very nicely hide a lot of the geekie stuff such as mounting drives and so on. The mounts are still there if you really want to look deeper :) Knoppix is pretty good and shouldn't look too different as to be too scary.

here soon. My wife got me a job at her work...

Looks like you'll have your hands full with all that lot!

Good luck and take it steady.

Cheers,
Martin
