If I may put a PS here at the top of the page so it won't go unnoticed,
what happends to a WU if you miss a deadline?
We now return you to your scheduled post .....
Quietly we read

contain our credulity we realized that Roger

I'm assuming AVG is some sort of anti virus software.
IF you have anti virus and a fire wall why not leave the modem
connected to the line.
I find it cheaper on dial-up to connect once a week at the weekend when
the rate is at its lowest and stock up on WUs then. So far I'm
experimenting to see what the optimal cache size is to allow me to do
this. Looks like it will be about 8.5 days.
(You should have both even when using dial
up) You also need bot checkers, spry ware checkers, and something
like addaware. The beta spyware checker from MS works quite well.
I have Adaware SE. I don't find I need to run it very often with the
firewall up but stuff does get through.
Then the system can dial out when it needs to. Set your mail reader
and news reader to text only. (It's never a good idea to use HTML in
mail whether on a modem or broad band connected all the time)
I'm guessing your problem may appear to be BOINC but probably lies
some where else.
I ran these same computers with Seti Classic and they stayed up for
weeks. I have one mouse, one keyboard and one monitor lead that I plug
into any one of three computers with all being in close proximity. 50%
of the time one of them will crash when I put the plugs in. The other
two used to stay up for up to 10 days or so. The only difference with
Boinc is that sometimes dialup requests freeze Boinc when the system is
not attended and effectively the system idles until I have the
opportunity to fix it. If somebody knows how I can disable DUN so that
it only responds to dial on demand I would very much like to hear.
Good Luck,
Best wishes...
