So why the reluctance to change?
For some of us it's not a reluctance to change but that there's no
version of the BOINC client for the OS we're using. In my case I'm
using Tru64 UNIX. So, when SETI Classic goes down I too quit after
56K+ WUs.
In my case, it's a reluctance to do unnecessary work or to solve the same
problem twice. SETI Classic has been running fine on my machines for
several years. I took the time to set up scripts and procedures that
keep it going with very minimal intervention from me. Since I always
keep a fair number of WUs in the cache, I don't usually notice outages or
need to care about them. In fact, I often go for weeks without thinking
about SETI at all, or remembering that it's running. Now I'm expected
to throw away something that works well for my purposes and replace it
with something new that I'll have to learn how to set up and manage, just
so I can keep doing what I've already been doing anyway. If I have to
install and learn new software and procedures, then I'm going to do it for
a project that hasn't already annoyed me by inconveniencing me. So I've
installed GIMPS and that's all I'll run after SETI Classic goes away.
Besides, I really hate the "BOINC" name.
