why does BOINC go BLANK?

I have just switched frrom Seti@home to Boinc.

On the general preferences page I have the following.
Do work while computer is in use? yes
Do work only after computer is idle for - (doesn't apply?)
Do work only between the hours of? (no restriction)
Leave applications in memory while preempted? no
Switch between applications every : 60 min (but I only do Seti work)
Use no more than 2 GB (50 GB was default ha ha ....)
confirm before connect internet: no
Use network only between the hours of : (no restriction)
Skip image file verification? no

On seti home preferences I have
Resource share . 100
Graphics preferences : SETI@home classic
Color preferences: Rainbow

etc.

I have been running Seti@home since 1999. Obviously I appreciated the
opportunity for
helping with the search - but I also enjoyed looking at the screensaver
itself - I must confess.

Now with BOINC I might enjoy seeing that 97 % of my CPU (while I write this
post) is running the
seti application. I might also enjoy looking at the screensaver, if I go to
settings, Display properties
(on a windows machine) - preview (btw. settings doesn't say : go to blank
screen). So the machine can display the new screensaver!

But if the machine is left on its on - then my old seti@home would kick in
after 5 min with the classic
look, now I go to a blank screen?

Why is that? Which part of the setup should I change? After all a screen
saver that shows only a blank screen isn't much of a screen saver, or what?

No need to wait. Enter your email/details and the Boinc database should
find you ok.

Question 1: Can I run BOTH classic and BOINC at the same time until
classic shuts down on Dec. 15 and then uninstall Classic?

Yes but that's not such a great idea.

If you're on Windows, then s@h-classic will steal most of the spare CPU
time away from Boinc and so Boinc will not work well.

On Linux/Mac/others, the CPU time would be shared between the two but...

The s@h-classic WUs are now the same as those now being processed on Boinc
and so the s@h-classic work is now pretty much redundant.

Most useful for new science is to run Boinc only.

Only run s@h-classic if you are desperately chasing that last do-or-die
milestone...

Question 2: I have been waiting about two hours for my new account No.
EMail. Is this wait time normal or is there a problem?

The s@h servers are getting hit very hard at the moment with new users.
They've added a second web server to help out. I would guess that their
email system is similarly 'busy'.

Sorry, if you've already done the form stuff as above, then a few more
hours may be needed to let the mails trickle through.

Aside: Have you checked that your mail has not been dumped in with all
your spam???

Welcome to Boinc,

Good luck,
Martin
