some anti-virus software going nuts about the Boinc directories changing 
and being updated regularly. Exclude those folders from scanning?

Or have you got the old "file indexing" enabled...

My drives run 24 X 7, but seti/B only accesses about once a minute. I
do still have indexing active with anti virus scanning and firewall...
Plus three different termite checkers.  I don't exclude anything from
checking.

If you are running  XP there are a lot of apps that should be running
unless BOINC is the only thing you want.  I usually have 6 or 7 apps
running and with one gig of ram it works fine.
