I've seen a few of these types of postings now, on here and in various
forums. Sort of a "bitter taste swan-song" and sometimes tinged with
almost palpable hate.
So what is with all the angst?
The s@h search is being developed further on a more capable platform to
do greater things. The s@h-classic version was very successful and
introduced many people to scientific computing. The next version,
Boinc-s@h, has introduced people now to many more scientific (and
others) projects already. Boinc also lets Berkeley do many more things
to advance s@h.
All this should be better for s@h and the volunteer users.
So are some people really so emotionally opposed to any form of change?
Or is all this angst just a kick-back from missed stats goals or a
disrupted personal routine?
Just wonderin'...
Yes, some people are emotionally opposed to any form of change. Their work units are just
as vital as an other cruncher's. Should SETI Classic be continued for the sake of those
who have trouble with change? Absolutely not! But, if such crunchers are significant to
SETI, and considering the number of such crunchers, I think SETI might have handled the
switch a bit more diplomatically. How specifically? I don't know. I didn't switch, until
it appeared I had no choice. With a lesser interest in science and ET, I might have just
bailed out.
Yes, I enjoyed my routine with SETI Classic and SETI Driver. Now, I'm begriming to enjoy
BOINC.
Yes, missed stats goals have troubled at least a few people. Personally, I have more
important things to fret about--and some of those things would seem utterly frivolous to
some of the people who had stats goals unrealized. :-) For a lot of people who were
proud of their WU, whether it was 25 or 25K, starting at zero registers as a loss. One
goes from having a respectable total, to being another mediocre beginner.
How can you know so much about SETI and BOINC, yet have so many blanks about human
behavior? :-) That's strictly rhetorical. Your informative and encouraging responses have
helped enlighten me, but there are many folks who require even greater encouragement.
Of course, that's merely my opinion.
Happily crunching.
