I know he can just reinstall and be happy, but I'm sure he'll be in the
middle of a work unit or two at the time, and he's neurotic about not
losing the processed work - he thinks it's all a big race.

Best way is to backup the entire boinc directory on the old system. Install the same boinc version on the new system.
Stop boinc on the new system, and copy the backup from the old system to the new system.
