I don't understand why 'setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu' is not found ...

Look like a problem with the nameresoulution. You can test it with a
"nslookup setiathome.berkeley.edu"

I agree, the DNS lookup is not working on your end.

I picked up another work unit just an hour ago, and the message log
shows that I haven't had any recent problems except yesterday when they
took the server offline for backup.

Whenever I stop getting work units, I click on "Reset Project". This
deletes all the work and downloads new files. I'm supposing that the
files get corrupted from time to time, and that's why the button is there.

Don't forget that Wednesday is maintenance day, but I'm not sure if it's
all day or just partial.

You should NEVER be doing a reset of the project!
A reset is ONLY needed when the project hangs for an extended period
of time, ie WEEKS!
Not being able to get workunits is going to become more and more
common as more and more users become interested in Seti again.
Currently there are 374,309 users with 761,628 host(s). Hosts equals
computers! That means that there are over 750 THOUSAND computers all
trying to connect to Berkeley !!!! Not ALL of us will be able to
connect on the first try.
Resetting not only dumps ALL the workunits you have in your cache, as
you said, but it ALSO dumps any credits you would have gotten for
crunching those units. Also any units you have already crunched are
dumped! No credit will be forthcoming for those either. You are not
saving anything by resetting.
