Ok, this one might get me flamed, but here goes..
One thing I notice among SETI people and astronomy types, is what
appears to me, to be a strong bias against any belief that other
intelligences have visited this planet. I suspect that at least some
of that was the result of Carl Sagon's influence.
I once saw Carl Sagan on a TV interview where they ask him why he didn't
believe in alien visitation. He said that until there's _physical_
evidence
of such visitations, there's no reason to believe. I have to agree with
that.
And yet, faced with exactly the same dirth of physical evidence, we
presume the liklihood that other intelligent life exists in the
universe.
I think that liklihood is incorrect, possibility is more appropriate. This
is based on the fact that intellegent life arose on this planet so it's
possible that it has happened on other planets. Astronomers have found
about 150 planets outside our solar system so far. None earth size but I
believe they will in time.
I am not suggesting that there is physical proof that this planet has
been visited by extraterrestial civilizations - only that we should
not exclude the possibility - as most of the Astronomy/SETI crowd has
done.
