Sorry george I wasn't quite clear - each machine has a hard disc. I just 
didn't fancy loading extra stuff on the machines that was never going to 
be used.

Then Knoppix supposedly has a distro that has Boinc built in. I tried
to find it once but could not, you may have better luck. Knoppix can
run off a cd. If you do it that way it will use the hard drive as swap
space. This will work for Boinc as long as you don't have too many
work units at one time because if the computer crashes, yes Linux
crashes sometimes, then the swap file will be lost.
