I'm far from Windows-savvy, but that's what I gather from postings I've
seen in various project forums: for each new WU, BOINC launches a fresh
process, which doesn't 'inherit' affinity settings from the previous
instance of the app.

Yep... I did some playing around the other night to see different behaviors.
Not that I doubted f/george, just was curious to see it "in action".

Changed to affinity on one of my computahs to just one processor, but after
it sent the results, it went back to using both.

Then was curious to see what would happen if I ended setiathome processes
>from the task manager (Win2003 Server, Boinc running as a service.) The
processes aborted all right, but when they were automatically re-launched,
Boinc went and downloaded two new ones and started all over. The lost WU's
were over 90% complete. Serves me right for playing. :-)

Yup, I have done exactly the same thing. Sometimes we have to get our
fingers burned to make us believe. I used to have a woodstove and
always told my small son that it was HOT, HOT, HOT!!!
I was working in the kitchen one day and turned around because he
screamed. He had walked up and touched it, just to confirm it was hot.
He was 2 or 3 at the time. After that he used to walk up and get
within a foot or so, reach out his hand and look at me and say "hot".
Fortunately the burn was very light and all he did was learn a lesson.
