does boinc really have to randomly do benchmarks, it does sort of take over
your computer for some vital seconds :)

It's not random, it tries to benchmark exactly five days after the
previous benchmarks. It's an unfortunate thing that users probably
install BOINC during the part of the day they're most actively using
the computer, so those five day intervals result in benchmarks being
rerun during that active time.

If you initiate the benchmarks from BOINC Manager at a time you wouldn't
normally be using the computer, that time will be the new reference for
the five day intervals, and will remain so if the system is always on
at that time.

(it's not normaly a problem, but that one was a bit close for confort hehe)
no, i really don't want to be bothered by boinc, i just want it to sit in
the background and chew on the spare cpu time thanks

The impact goes the other way, too. When they are run while the system
is heavily loaded by other things, the benchmarks may be much lower than
normal. That doesn't have much effect on S@H enhanced since it doesn't
use the benchmarks in credit calculations, but many other BOINC projects
still do.
