That's what I'd want for myself, too.

Sorry I'm sure this is an easy question. I have erased the BOINC
program and reinstalled on the MAC but just can't get it to joint the
old account.I have gone into My Account on BOINC and tried to change
the MAC but it always seems to revert to the new account.

That's probably because of configuration files. You can find these files 
at /Library/Applications Support/BOINC Data/.

I don't have access to Mac right now, but if I were you, I'd enter an 
e-mail and a password for your account on the seti@home website (in 
order to be able to authenticate yourself that way, instead of using the 
account key). Then I'd remove configuration files of BOINC (you should 
exit BOINC first) and finally I would attach to the project using the 
e-mail and password. Normally, this should do the trick.
