I think the OP was right, this newsgroup is pretty dead. Did BOINC kill
it? Is there a BOINC group?

Yes, there is a BOINC message board. Go here:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/
and down near the bottom left is a link to the
message boards. You have to register, but it is
a short form to fill out and not intrusive. Every
BOINC project has a message board as well. I check
them all once a month to see what is up.
Usenet will always be here for the purists or old
skool style of text only communications. But facing
facts tells me that the young kids coming online are
herded more to message boards, IM, and www. Its a
reality of commercialism and visual ads drawing them
in like moths to a flame. That said, wikipedia.com
and google.com projects seem to hold my interest more
than usenet projects and discussions as of late. I
guess it all comes down to our first experiences with
computers. If we tried usenet first and it was good,
then we stick with it. If we tried GUI first and it
was good, then we might avoid text only except for IM.
But some people try GUI and instead of the acronym being
Graphical User Interface, it is Graphical User Interference
and the user might gravitate to usenet or vi or unix
instead.
