As opposed to frying itself from the outside?

I suspect that you are a troll. However, I'll give you the benefit of the 
doubt.

a) If your CPU cooked because SETI was running overnight then it wasn't 
cooled properly and was just waiting to happen as soon as you did something 
CPU-intensive. It just happened to be SETI.

b) If it was an Intel CPU then it had to be really old anyway as Intel has 
had a thermal safety feature on all their CPUs made in the last 7 years or 
more. Spend a buck and replace it.

c) SETI didn't kill your PC, either poor maintenance or a poor build did.

d) Solitaire can fry a CPU if the heatsink falls off or isn't fitted 
correctly.

e) Oh, that's right, there is no "e".
